We have a young people’s outreach team to support young people with accessing relationships and sex education (RSE) support. This service is to help young people aged 13-19 years, or up to 25 years with a learning disability, who live or study in Dorset.

We understand that some young people may need more support after RSE sessions in school. Our young people’s outreach team supports their understanding to enable them to make informed decisions about their sexual health, even if this is a decision that professionals do not agree with.

If you are a member of school staff, a social worker, GP, parent/carer, health professional or work with young people, you can refer a young person to our outreach team for support. If you are a young person aged 13 or over, you can also contact our service directly.

How it works

  • The referrer will discuss outreach support with the young person, including what the young person would like to achieve from the support.
  • Referrer completes the Sexual Health Education & Outreach Service Referral Form.
  • The young person is allocated an advisor.
  • Advisor contacts the referrer and then young person, usually within three weeks.
  • An assessment of the young person's needs and goals is carried out and agreed.
  • Appropriate support is provided.

1-1 support

The young people’s outreach team offers 1-1 support for people who need help regarding sexual health issues and risky behaviour. Working within the multi-disciplinary team, our sexual health advisors can offer brief interventions to help people make positive changes to their behaviour.

We can help people to:

  • access contraception and sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics
  • develop an understanding of sexual consent and healthy relationships
  • think about their rights, responsibilities, wishes and expectations within a relationship
  • understand how to minimise risk associated with sexual relationships including contraception, STIs, coercion and control
  • reduce problematic use of pornography.
