Genitourinary Medicine Service

Our Genitourinary Medicine Service is responsible for the provision of specialist sexual health services for the residents of Dorset. This service is made up of two branches, one covering Bournemouth, Poole and the surrounding region provided by The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital, and the wider Dorset area provided by Dorset County Hospital.

Services provided at Bournemouth Hospital:

  • We welcome patients aged from 13 to 113
  • Open Access, self-referral service
  • Online and SMS (“text”) booking available for same day service
  • Free testing and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections
  • Same-day HIV Testing Service
  • Vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B
  • HPV vaccination for eligible patients
  • Emergency hormonal contraception
  • Free condom provision
  • Pregnancy testing and advice
  • Follow up and testing after sexual assault
  • Management of HIV
  • PReP – advice and monitoring; trial centre (from April 2018 - limited number, eligibility criteria apply)
  • PEPSE – assessment, provision and follow up
  • Consultant Led Referral Clinics for Complex Genito-Urinary Conditions

For the Same Day Service:

  • or text the following number 07537 404253 with: BMTHM for male clinic slot, BMTHF for female clinic slot and then follow the instructions.

For Appointments:

  • Call us at 01202 704644, option 1

When you arrive at the clinic, if you haven't been before or your details have altered since your last visit, will be asked to fill in a registration form. You may want to complete this at home before you come in and bring in with you. Don't worry if there are sections you don't understand, ask the reception staff when you attend

  • Testing for and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • LGBT outreach clinic (Over The Rainbow in Bournemouth)
  • Testing for HIV, hepatitis B and C
  • Management of thrush and other genital problems
  • Management of pelvic pain
  • Pregnancy testing and advice
  • Emergency contraception
  • Provision of contraception including contraceptive implants (under 25’s at Weymouth only)
  • Follow-up and testing after sexual assault
  • Management of HIV infection (Weymouth only)
  • Post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PEPSE)
  • Advice and monitoring regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PreP)
  • Hepatitis B vaccination (selected groups only - not occupational)
  • HPV vaccination (not available free outside the NHS programme)
  • Sexual problems clinic (not Bridport)
  • Free condoms.
